June 12, 2025 - We have to return our boat back to Trevor Wales, so at some point we have to turn around and head back. Just past Whitchurch, where we stayed last night is a lock ladder that we would love to go through, but the winding hole to turn around after the locks, is a long way past the lock ladder. We were told that the current is strong on the way back so we should allow extra time returning, so we decided it would be best to turn before the lock ladder. Since we're turning early we have to find some meandering on the way, so Jim found us an arm of the canal that leads to a Marina with a cafe so we will stop there for an afternoon treat before stopping for the evening
Our first lift bridge of the day
Jim & Jeanene on the bow
lots of boats lined up
We stopped for water before hitting the tiny winding hole. The lock staircase is just to the right of the front of our boat.
The lock is open to the left of Kevin. It is manned by a volunteer group
Our second attempt at the tiny winding hole. There was a particular point on the winding hole that we need to point toward, since our boat is so long. With help from the lock volunteers we now know where we have to point to.
A gongoozler has asked if we want her to pull from the front, to make for less maneuvering
We're getting there!
When we are completely across the winding hole we have about 4 feet to spare
We're headed back!
Another bridge...so skinny!
the full-timers like to decorate their boats
Kev's on the lift this morning
A backpacker passed us on the towpath on the right. Most people walking pass us!
a pretty bridge
this bridge had a traffic jam. One car was waiting for the bridge to go back down. The other was a gongoozler just hanging out in his car watching the narrowboats.
A little rain
on our way to the marina...the geese are leading the way
this boat waved us on, and it took some maneuvering to get in between these boats and then under the bridge
when we need to wait for the bridge to be raised or lowered the person on the back jumps off with the center line and pulls the boat in.
We ordered "luxury milkshakes" at the marina. And we were surprised to find that a milkshake in England is chocolate milk with some chocolate sauce and whipped cream. An American type milkshake is called a "thickshake".
Pretty boats in the marina
we passed someone doing laundry
Our view tonight
sunset over the canal
and it was chilly enough tonight to have a fire!
