Aug 26, 2024 - It was an hour drive to our next campground on the eastern side of the island. We will stay 3 nights at Red Point Provincial Park. The campground is a big grassy hill looking out onto the ocean. The Red Point sand isn't as red as at Stanhope and it doesn't have dunes next to the beach, instead it has a 30 foot cliff.
Pretty church on the hill, on our drive to Red Point
Nice view for the next few nights
we love a view from the back of the RV
Site 5 and 6...the Diullo/Anderson compound
the bench in front of the kids' activity center at Red Point
It's quite a few steps down to the beach
Once again we have the beach to ourselves
Kevin's new hammer, that Gino engraved for him
the machete, hammer combo, he can't wait to split some firewood
It's National Dog Day, Mirabelle is happy with her new ball
Aug 27, 2024 - Kev and I got an early morning beach walk in, before leaving for Basin Head Provincial Park which is a 10 minute drive from our campsite.
beautifully quiet beach
a very hairy rock
looks like those trees will eventually be in the water
morning selfie
I went a bit overboard with the beach pics this morning
We ran into Gerry and Mirabelle on the beach.
pretty, bright green, grassy dunes
Basin Head Provincial Park is only a day use park. It has a cafe, ice cream shop, gift shop, fishery museum and a beautiful beach
The beach is split by this channel that leads to a tidal lagoon. It is the only place where Irish Moss grows, which is said to have 40% more carrageenan than typical seaweed. The Irish Moss is protected since it was over harvested. The Basin Head harbor was a productive fishing area for many years for about 25-30 fisherman. The lagoon provided a protected harbor.
The channel has a bridge that connects the two sides of the beach and is a favorite spot for jumping.
There is a lifeguard that watches the channel, as people jump from the bridge and the sides. The jump is anywhere from 9 ft to 5 ft, depending on the tide. The signs at the bridge of course say, no jumping allowed.
people were jumping from everywhere
Dads, kids...
but we didn't jump
then the off duty lifeguards got involved. It was a lot of fun to watch
we enjoyed a walk on the beach (which allowed dogs, so Mirabelle came with)
then a picnic lunch with a view
Gerry and I went to the fisheries museum. I love looking at knots
and sails...I love how the sail was attached to the mast with circular wooden hand made rings
PEI is known for bluefin tuna. Hanging from the ceiling are life-sized replicas of tuna. The PEI tuna can be 300 pounds to 1200 pounds. Most of the tuna caught is sent to Japan for sushi. Each captain is allowed 2 tuna/2024 season. The number is determined based on last year's season.
These are eel spears. the 4 prong spears are used in the summer months and the 6-8 prong spears are used in the winter, since the eels hide in the mud
ice cream stop
the woman from the fishery museum told us that North Lake is where the tuna fisherman come in, so we decided to drive the 15 minutes to the harbor and see if anyone was coming in with a catch of the day
we talked to one fisherman who said that he had caught one tuna so far, but was just taking charters out currently since it was a bit slow.
the north side of the island had quite a few windmills
So pretty to see the fields with the ocean in the background
Aug 28, 2024 - The weather doesn't look great today, so we decided to wander around Souris this afternoon. We went to the Souris Lighthouse, the Souris Beach Gateway Park, out to lunch at the Red Claw Bistro. The restaurant had a view of the Ferry terminal for the CTMA Traversier which goes twice a day to the Magdaleine Islands, a 5 hour ferry ride.
It was a windy, cloudy morning
lots of waves
I want this lobster trap chair, isn't it cute!
The Souris Lighthouse
The lighthouse had a nice museum inside
Souris is famous for its sea glass and they had a nice display with sea glass and sand samples from all over the world
the old electric light
and we were so happy they let you go outside at the top of the lighthouse
view of the town of Souris and the ferry terminal
It looks like the ship is going down
There is a nice boardwalk in downtown Souris that goes along the beach (Souris Beach Gateway Park). There were quite a few people on the beach collecting sea glass.
the boardwalk was about a mile long
In the distance you can see the ferry docked at the terminal
I was happy to find a photo op at the artists consortium in town
the road to Red Point PP looks like it's falling into the ocean
