Jan 3, 2025 - We're going to NYC to see the Broadway Musical "Suffs" with Meg & Maddy.  They saw it a few weeks ago and loved it.  They convinced us that we should go see it, since the show is closing on January 5th.  So we found tickets and booked a flight to NYC.  I can't think of a better way to spend my birthday!  We had an 8:00AM flight to Newark and made it to M&M's apartment by 11:30.

A selfie for Meg, letting her know we're headed her way

There's the city!

Our first time using NJ transit from the airport to NY Penn Station...so easy

A b-day card waiting for me!

and a b-day diet coke in the fridge

Meg & Maddy are still decorated for Christmas

After lunch in the apartment, we headed across the park to the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.  It was a cold day, but a nice day for a short walk (only 25 minutes to the museum).

The museum is in the 64 room mansion of Andrew Carnegie.  It was built from 1899-1902.  It was the first private residence in the country to have a steel frame and one of the first in NY to have an elevator.  This pic is the ceiling of the dining room.  There is a lot of beautiful wood paneling in this home!

The exhibition, which was spread out over all three floors of the museum, was called "Making Home - Smithsonian Design Triennial".  The exhibit, had 25 commissioned installations that explore the physical and emotional realities of what home means.

We listened to a recording of indigenous people still living in the Everglades.

pretty cushions in the conservatory (we didn't see Professor Plum OR Colonel Mustard there)

On the walls around Mr Carnegie's office, there were sayings.  This was the one I liked the most.  And I didn't take any pics of the exhibition in this room (or in most rooms, because most installations weren't really picture worthy)

This was one of my favorite installations.  In the drawing room we watched a movie of a marching band marching through someone's dining room.

The staircase was amazing (lots more wood paneling)

The chandelier in the staircase

This was another of my favorite installations.  A stained glass window that when you looked closer at it, was made with.......

microscope slides with tissue samples embedded on them!

The room with the stained glass microscope slides was filled with test tubes filled with blood samples.  (Only a retired scientist, like me, could appreciate this installation!)

Kevin trying to understand the next installation

"feel the spirit" in the stairway carpet

What a beautiful front door

I'm not sure the exhibition was worth the $16 we each paid, but getting to walk through the Carnegie Mansion was definitely worth it.

such pretty fresh flowers

We walked by the Guggenheim

pretty bricks along Central Park

I love the park

Maybe next time, we will visit the Met (that requires a full day)

pretty views of the city across the meadow

empty benches

love these brownstones along 85th St

We played some Rummikub with Maddy while we waited for Meg to get home from work.

Marinara Pizza for dinner

And a visit from Ellie, Henry AND Fran!

What do we do while we wait for the subway???

Take pics with various combinations of the 4 of us!

\

I tried on the hat (the woman behind us is wearing) in the gift shop at the Cooper Hewitt Museum.

I think this was the last combination

Had to get a pic of Maddy in front of the Booth Theater

We're here!

The woman sitting behind us, offered us her "Keep Marching" Sash for a photo op.

SOOOOO GOOD!  Maybe we'll get to see it during it's US tour next year

The obligatory pic in front of the Music Box Theater

Next we headed across the street to Junior's to pick up a few slices of cheesecake for the b-day girl

Times Square pic

$9.25 for a slice of cheesecake...worth it!

I wish.....

Jan 4, 2025 - We walked to Tal for bagels this morning.  We'll chill with Meg & Maddy and then head back to Indy after lunch.  It's a really quick trip, but so easy.  We need to do it more often!

I'm a sesame girl

Nice walk

119 W 85th St is decorated for the holidays

Yum

A quick game of Wingspan before we go

and of course we're listening to Suffs while we play

Thanks, Meg & Maddy!  We'll be back!

Such a pretty lobby

Mural in the 86th St Subway

A sandwich on NJ Transit

The city and United planes

Kev are you flying that plane?

We bought the cheapest seats (no carry on allowed and we couldn't pick our seats), because we didn't care if we didn't sit together and we didn't bring much for our 24 hour trip.  On the flight home they didn't assign our seats until right before we boarded, which made me think we were going to get bumped due to an overbooked flight, but we got the seats right behind first class, with LOTS of legroom.  Woohoo!

Views of the World Trade Center (and landing planes) from the runway

there are a crazy number of cranes next to Newark airport

Views of NJ

flying into the sunset
