The Baumgardners Visit us in Los Osos

Mar 20, 2026 - Ann & Erich are flying into San Luis Obispo today for a 5 day visit, over Ann's spring break.  We're so excited for them to meet Marilyn and to get to show them around Los Osos!

Marilyn seemed to warm up to Aldo

and Anners right away

It was a beautiful afternoon for a walk in the Elfin Forest, down the street from Elaine's

sisters

Black sage in front of Hollister

The gang on the boardwalk

Sandos and half price beers at High St

Marilyn couldn't take her eyes off the dog

She was happy to be at the table in a high chair!

the High St gang (at our favorite table!)

Good night Greene's

Mar 21, 2026 - This morning I have reservations for a tour of the San Piedras Lighthouse, just north of San Simeon.  Then we will meander home, stopping in Cambria for a picnic lunch and do a quick walk at the Fiscillini Ranch before heading back to the apartment for dinner and then Sea Pines for dessert and live music.

We stopped at a beach in Morro Bay to eat our breakfast with a view and I found a Black Tegula shell

and there were a lot of these, which "Seek" told me was By-the-wind-Sailor (a free-floating hydrozoa that lives on the surface of the ocean)

It was a pretty morning on the beach

The San Piedras Blancas Lighthouse has 2 hour docent led tours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays

This is the "white rock" that the lighthouse is named for (it's covered in bird poop)

a view of the rock from the trail

The NOAA whale team lives on the lighthouse grounds and this is their count of the whales they've seen:  254 adults & juves and 18 mom's & calves.  The've seen Blue, Killer and Humpback whales and Bottlenose and Risso dolphins.  We watched for blows, but didn't see any while we were there.

We enjoyed the tour, there is a 1.5 mile trail around the grounds and we were only able to go into the first floor of the lighthouse.  The lighthouse was first illuminated in 1875.  It was originally 100 ft tall, but was damaged by earthquakes over the year and after one in 1948 they decided to remove the upper 3 floors (they removed about 30 ft).  In 1975 the light was automated, the sound signal removed and the light station was unmanned.

As we were walking around the property we saw a small beach with a lot of young elephant seals.  And they were certainly a noisy bunch!  A mile south of here is the rookery that we stop at whenever we pass by.  When we were there a month ago there were a lot of pups and Mom's but all that's left now are young seals.

Next we went to Moonstone Beach in Cambria and went for a walk on the boardwalk and had a picnic lunch

sisters' shadows

Next we stopped at Fiscillini to walk the Bluff Trail

these views just don't get old

and of course I love the benches here!

poppies!

after dinner at home, we sat outside at Sea Pines, with a beer, dessert and the weekly Saturday evening live music

Mar 22, 2026 - Another day another boardwalk!  We did the Morro Bay State Park boardwalk before heading up the Black Hill hike.  Then we wandered around Morro Bay to see what we could find at their town-wide yard sale.  Then it's dinner at Elaine & Ian's!

The boardwalk is a great spot for birding

the bay (at low tide) and the mountains

We started up the Black Hill trail

the top of Black Hill

Nice view of Morro Rock from the top

For lunch we had a picnic at Morro Bay Strands State Park.  In the distance there are 2 people on horses (Kev's jealous)

pretty nice spot for a horseback ride

The Baumgardners went for a walk on the beach

A round of darts before dinner

and some Marilyn time.  Dinner was tacos (Ian grilled) rice casserole and salad.  It was a wonderful dinner and so nice to get to hang with the Greene's.

Mar 23, 2026 - It's a work day, so Ann & I are watching Marilyn while the guys do a trail ride in Paso Robles.  It's the Los Osos Farmer's Market today, so we'll walk down there and after work we'll head to Morro Bay for dinner.

We got to spend a little time with Elaine before she headed to work

Anners kept Marilyn occupied with her singing and dancing

The guys had a nice trail rid

Marilyn's enjoying all the attention

a walk to downtown for the Farmer's Market

a view of the rock after dinner at The Galley

Ann's wearing it like a hat

It looked like it was going to be a nice sunset so we went to MDO to walk the bluff trail

We weren't able to get pics of it, but there were a lot of whales out there!

Valencia Peak in the sun

There it goes!

Nice spot to enjoy the sunset

We stopped at a pull-out to enjoy the views of Osos/Morro Bay

Mar 24-28, 2026 - Tuesday Ann & Erich spent the morning/early afternoon at Hearst Castle.  When they got home we played some games (we had 3 new games to teach them this trip) and then went downtown for Thai dinner at Noi's.  Wednesday they had to head back to Cincinnati.

the game table!

a bottle on the way to the airport

Marilyn is good at planks!

how did you get in there?

Marilyn's loving real food

it's messy though

and she is sure getting around, she's not crawling yet, scooting backwards
