Jan 17, 2025 - We started off the morning with a quick walk out our back gate to Baked on Maui, a nice little local breakfast/lunch spot. After breakfast we headed to the south coast of Maui for some snorkeling. As we got to the area it started to rain and when we pulled into the parking lot it poured. The weather didn't look great for snorkeling, so we decided to spend the afternoon at Baldwin Beach.

A walk on Baldwin Beach and a few turtles
nice front porch at our AirBnB
Janet and I drove to Ho'okipa Beach to watch the surfers, but it was too rough for surfers. And the only surfer we saw came out of the water pretty bloodied.
it was fun watching the waves crash on the rocks
We stopped by to see the turtles in their usual spot.
Jan 18, 2025 - This morning the alarm went off at 4:00AM (which wasn't hard for us, we still seem to be on east coast time). It's a two-ish hour drive to the top of Haleakala for the sunrise. After the sunrise we hiked the Sliding Sands Trail (Keonehe'ehe'e) which ends at the bottom of the volcano (13 miles round trip). We hiked down for 1 hour and then it took us an hour and 45 minutes to get back to the top. After Haleakela we drove back to the south shore to see if we could find some snorkeling. After dinner and games we were ready for bed!
to get to the top of Haleakala there are LOTs of switchbacks
Sunrise was at 7:00AM, but people started lining up at 6:00. (we booked a timed entrance for the sunrise a month before we came for a few dollars/car)
Pretty colors above the clouds

look at those clouds!

Mauna Kea Silversword
We're headed down into the volcano crater (which isn't technically a crater it's a depression). The observatory is on the peak above us.
beautiful views on the way down
only a few footsteps in front of us
It's a nice easy walk, but it's DOWN...we have to save enough to get back UP.
It feels like we're on the moon
Wow, we're tall
can you see the people on the trail below us?
the silversword looks lit up
this is our turn around point
there's the moon peeking over the mountain
Woohoo!
don't fall off that rock, Kev
look for the hikers again...

Molokai off in the distance
After our hike on Haleakela, we headed straight to the beach, Makena Landing, to see if we could find some snorkeling. There isn't much beach at Makena Landing, everyone sits up above the beach. This was our view.
The snorkeling was pretty murky (the snorkel report called it a 4 out of 10), but we were able to see this turtle! Janet yelled to me that she saw I turtle and as I was swimming toward her, the turtle and I ran into each other. I'm not sure who was more startled.
