January 13-14, 2025 - It's finally time for our trip to Hawaii! The weather in Indiana has been horrible...two snow storms, 8 inches one week, 5 the next and on top of all the snow, the highs have been in the 20's for days on end. We are flying through Phoenix (3.5 hr flight), with a 2.5 hr layover there before the 6.5 hr flight to Maui (Kahului Airport). It's a long day. We rented a car at the airport and drove 20 minutes to our AirBnB for the night before heading to Hana for two nights.
American Airlines in Phoenix
We've landed in Hawaii!
The drive to our AirBnB
The fence at our apartment is lined with old surf boards
We stopped at the local Paia grocery store and picked up a frozen pizza for dinner (before heading to bed at 7:30!
We woke up at 4:30
That's a lot of boards
We were on the road to Hana by 8:00AM. The 52 mile road has over 600 curves and is about a 2.5-3 hour drive. It was a bit overcast when we started and looked like it had just rained
This was one of the wider bridges we crossed on the road to Hana. There are over 50 bridges on the road, and most are single lane bridges. The road was mostly completed in the early 1900's.
We stopped at the Garden of Eden, for an hour.
It was a beautiful spot to walk through
I had never seen a rainbow eucalyptus tree before...so pretty
bamboo
These looked like Birds of Paradise, but they had a different name, which I can't remember.
another rainbow eucalyptus
Nice bench
You can see the road to Hana in the middle right of the pic
The rock down in the water was used in the opening scene of Jurassic Park
Lower Puohokamoa Falls
Kev wanted to climb this tree
Such a beautiful day
Not sure what this plant is, but it looks like it would glow in the dark
there were a lot of the leaves on the ground
Bamboo Alley
100 year old Mango, with a 64 year old retiree
Kevin wanted to climb in there and get a banana for breakfast
A different view down to Keopuka Rock (from Jurassic Park)
Close up view of Keopuka Rock
Back on the road again, with Keanae Peninsula in the distance
A view down to Honomanu Bay
I've got a tree sticking out of my head
Next we drove off the Hana Highway to Keanae Peninsula. You could really see the volcano flow that forms this part of the island
lava rocks
Keanae Village wants us to drive slowly
It was raining a bit when we were here, so we decided to have lunch in the car with this pretty view
Another narrow single lane bridge
This bridge has lots of waterfall views
We finally made it to a beach (Hamoa Beach)
Kev's headed in
pretty beach
Dead End
